Stephen Ashbrook

Please join us for a night of music with Stephen Ashbrook! As a precursor to Saturday nights full band event, enjoy Stephen Ashbrook Unplugged Friday Sep 20th 8-11PM. A local favorite! Arrive early we are always packed when Stephen visits!

West Coast singer/songwriter Stephen Ashbrook had access to only two records growing up (Simon & Garfunkel’s Bridge Over Troubled Water and Jesus Christ Superstar), both of which were enticing enough to send the California native on a hunt to his local library to expand his musical horizons.

Citing heroes as diverse as John Steinbeck, the Rolling Stones, and Winston Churchill, Ashbrook honed his chops amidst the fertile late-’90s Tempe, Arizona alt-rock scene, where he took home The Phoenix Tribune’s Best Acoustic Performer title in both 1998 and 2000; he even got to play for President William Jefferson Clinton, at the request of the White House.

Known for his rich baritone, smooth falsetto, and penchant for open-road heartland folk-rock in the vein of Tom Petty, the Wallflowers, and Joe Henry, he released an EP, About Last Night, in 1993, followed by a full-length eponymous studio album with his band Satellite in 1995.

His solo debut, the critically acclaimed Navigator, arrived in 1998, with Drive and American B-Sides, the latter of which featured members of the Gin Blossoms, the Pistoleros, and Dead Hot Workshop, arriving in 2001 and 2002, respectively.

Ashbrook relocated to Portland, Oregon after the arrival of the latter, releasing his first live collection, Double Live @ Long Wong’s, in 2004, and White Balloons, his sixth studio album, in 2008.

The Naughty Bits!

The Naughty Bits! know how to DO IT! The glam-rock influenced band who takes themselves not so seriously, takes their crowd quite seriously. Always throwing the party they’d want to go to themselves, every performance is full of medleys and mash-ups that run the gamut. From Rock n’ Roll via David Bowie era, to Funk Sly style, to bitchin’ 80’s New Wave like B-52’s. “They don’t do it anymore, but The Naughty Bits! do.”

Jennifer Westwood & the Handsome Devils
Sep 28 @ 9:00 pm – Sep 29 @ 12:00 am

Jennifer Westwood and the handsome devils

“Jennifer Westwood and the Handsome Devils sound like they made a serendipitous wrong turn on their way to the juke joint and wound up in a countrypolitan cathedral instead. It’s beautiful and ever so haunting. Westwood’s voice is sexy and strong as it applies the seduction over the band’s groove and thoughtful reserve…..And the Handsome Devils lay it down as pretty as their golden haired captain. It’s honky-tonk with a little less honky. It’s atmospheric yet immediate and approachable. It packs a wallop” – Rochester City Newspaper

At the heart of the band is Jennifer Westwood and guitarist Dylan Dunbar, who share an affection for gospel, Texas blues, Stax, and Muscle Shoals era artists. Jennifer cut her teeth on gospel in Detroit before hitting the gritty local bars that set her career in motion; along the way performing back up for acts including Motown’s Carl Carlton, adding several Detroit Music Awards to her credit, including one for work with Sponge (Sony) frontman Vin Dombroski on a traditional country recording (Lalar V).

Dylan Dunbar spent his teen years refining his chops in local blues joints, moving on to perform with W.C. Handy award winners such as Chef Chris and Johnny “Yard Dog” Jones, as well as country artist Whitey Morgan. His dynamic playing style is a compliment to Jennifer’s broad vocal range and unique sound that invokes influences ranging from Linda Ronstadt to Big Mama Thorton.

The last couple years have seen them performing across the country rather than at home in the rustbelt, growing a family of fans from New York to Texas. They’ve been on bills with acts such as Hayes Carll, Paul Thorn, Dale Watson, Delbert McClinton, and have performed alongside Patti Smith (with her bandmates backing Smith as well); grateful for every opportunity the road has afforded them.

Fully embracing the character and spirit of Detroit, they consider it an honor to represent a talent filled city of rugged determination, faith and hard working people.

karl jones in front of the american flagKarl Jones is from Dublin Ireland and has been living and working as a tour guide in Sedona for 4 years. He is an accomplished singer / songwriter / guitarist with radio and television appearances in both Ireland and the US to his credit.

Karl had a chance meeting with Thomas Banyacya, a Hopi Elder, in 1996 after an American concert at George Washington University in Washington DC. Thomas was on a speaking tour of the East Coast, teaching the public about Hopi spirituality and world view. Their meeting led to an invitation to Arizona to visit the Hopi Reservation, and Karl discovered Sedona along the way.

Enchanted by the experience and incredible beauty of the American Southwest, Karl relocated to Sedona from Ireland in 2002, immersing himself in the geology, history and wildlife of the Sedona area.

Attracted to the Safari Jeep Tour company because of it’s special connection to the Hopi and it’s focus on wildlife, Karl divides his time between his passion for giving Jeep tours, and promoting his debut solo CD 1916, with regular performances in Phoenix, Flagstaff, and Sedona.

Tom Bertling – Singer Songwriter

smootmahooty

BIOGRAPHY(s)
TOM BERTLING – Lead Vocals, Song Writer, Acoustic & Electric Guitars

At the age of seven, Tom traded his brand new 007 Secret Agent Spy Case that he got for Christmas to a neighborhood

friend for a beat up acoustic guitar that had a large hole in the back.  He came home and proudly showed the trade

to his parents, who immediately told him to take back the guitar and get his 007 spy case.  Tom refused.  When his

parents realized that he was not going to return the guitar, they put strings on it with the condition that he learn

to play the Marine Hymn, he did.  He perfected his craft, sitting on the front porch for hours on end.  Number 8 of 12

children, Tom was raised in Delphos, a small town in northern Ohio.  Some of his earliest musical influences were

listening to his grandmother play guitar and sing old songs from the 20’s and 30’s, and tuning in to CKLW, an AM

radio station in the Windsor/Detroit area.  With an appreciation for all kinds of musical styles, Toms’ original

music cannot be categorized.  He writes a little bit of everything and he calls it “Mutt Music.”  He has played in

smokey dark corners of more pubs, dives, and roadhouses than he can remember.  Tom lived in Nashville for 7 years

and had the honor of playing on the Grand Ole Opry stage twice, and numerous showcase clubs such as The Bluebird

Cafe and Douglas’ Corner.  The Nashville experience enabled him to live and work with some of the best song writers

in the industry.  His unique guitar and vocal style has won him fans from around the world.  It’s not uncommon to

hear such accolades as “What an incredible singer,” or “You wrote that song, why aren’t you famous?”  He always asks

if they own a record company.  The simple truth is, that he pursued the gift he was given and stayed true to the

dreams of his youth.  He actually gets to do what he loves, play music full time, and get paid to do it.  “It doesn’t

get any better than that!”

Merican’ Slang
Oct 19 @ 2:00 pm – 6:00 pm

“Something about brass and woodwind instruments that makes every Merican Slang show seem like a backstage pass to Jazz Fest in New Orleans. “Shake your ass” music does the band justice.” – Hakim Bellamy, Local IQ, “Albuquerque’s Intelligent Alternative”

Established 4/20/2011

A funk band- Super Group, Merican Slang began as a side project of members of several Albuquerque acts who came together to form a band with a truly Merican, Democratic, approach to music making. The result is a unique sound that blends Merican Funk, with Merican Southern Rock! Merican Slang has shared the stage with artists Cody ChessnuTT (The Roots), Richard Howell (Carlos Santana), and Frank Hannon (Tesla).
