Kneebody @ Musical Instrument Musem
Apr 19 @ 7:00 pm

Sunday, April 19 | 7:00 p.m.
Tickets: $27.50–$32.50

The American band Kneebody is a musical chameleon whose natural camouflage lies somewhere in the genres of post-bop, indie-rock, and hip-hop—maybe. It’s easiest to describe the group as a jazz band; the five musicians take their cues from jazz instrumentation, but in the process they layer in blends of unorthodox and eclectic styles. The final product is explosive energy drawn from skilled composing and compelling improvisation.

Since its inception in 2001, the band has received numerous accolades for its remarkably new style. The group was nominated for a GRAMMY in 2009 and has collaborated with musicians such as Wayne Krantz, Daedelus (also known as Alfred Darlington), and Busdriver (also known as Regan Farquhar).

“It’s probably safe to assume at this point that no other band working today can offer what Kneebody delivered at the Blue Whale on Friday night.”—Los Angeles Times

“There isn’t a handy term or genre for the music that Kneebody creates. . . . Whatever the terminology, this group has an audience.”—New York Times

Emmett Chapman
Chapman is a jazz musician best known as the inventor of the Chapman Stick and maker of Chapman Stick family of instruments. Originally a guitarist, Chapman began recording and performing beginning in the late 1960s. He played with several different popular artists, including jazz guitarist Barney Kessell and popular singer/songwriter Tim Buckley before taking his own band on the road.

In 1969, Chapman modified his homemade nine-string “Freedom Guitar” to accommodate his “Free Hands” tapping method. While some guitarists had done two-handed tapping with the fingers of the right hand parallel to the strings, Chapman’s method had the fingers of both hands perpendicular to the strings. This culminated in the creation of the Electric Stick, which he later named the Chapman Stick. He founded his company, Stick Enterprises in 1974 and has made more than 6,000 instruments since then.

During the 1970s, Chapman toured extensively to promote his music and the instrument. In 1985, Chapman released a solo album titled Parallel Galaxy. In 1987, Chapman released a performance video titled Hands Across The Board. These days Chapman still performs, though not as much, and primarily in the Los Angeles area, where he lives. He also continues to head up Stick Enterprises, the company that makes Chapman Sticks.

Corey Scoffern, better known by his stage name The Grouch, is an American rapper and producer based in Maui, Hawaii.[1] He is a founding member of Living Legends, an underground hip hop collective based in Los Angeles, California.

Eligh

In first grade, at a friend’s birthday party, Eligh and the rest of the kids watched a movie called “Beat Street.” The movie made quite an impression and inspired Eligh to make a trip to his local record store where he picked up LL Cool J’s “I’m Bad.” After one listen, he knew what he wanted to do. The year was 1985. Eligh’s first official step into the hip-hop world was under the name lower m.c. and his first crew was the Boogalu Badboys with his friend Scarub. At the time, they were both attending Hamilton High School in L.A. They changed their name to Urban Instinct and then they met Murs, a fellow Hamilton student. The three of them became known as 3 Melancholy Gypsys (3MG). Eligh was living with his aunt and uncle, but was kicked out of the house. This would end up being the event that led to him becoming part of the Living Legends. After being kicked out, Eligh moved up to the bay area and began staying on a friend’s couch. The friends he was staying with had a house party one night and one of the partygoers was The Grouch. Through a mutual friend they were introduced and ended up hooking up to record a song together. While they were working on the song, Sunspot came by and met Eligh and brought Eligh into the crew. From there, the rest is Legends history. Eligh credits a wide range of musical influences including Michael Jackson, Freestyle Fellowship, and Bob Dylan. Under his beat-making alter ego, Gandalf, Eligh has helped provide the backbone of the Legends sound and is responsible for many of the Legends classic songs. Eligh’s latest project, The Grouch & Eligh “No More Greener Grasses,” is available now. The release date of Eligh’s new solo album, “Enigma”, is April 5.

Zion I

MySpace • Twitter • Facebook • Website

This duo of genre-bender pride has made a name for itself on the Bay Area scene by successfully mixing spiritualism and hip-hop. Oakland’s MC Zumbi and DJ/producer Amp Live blend hip-hop and trip-hop beats with lyrics focused on a message of unity, hope, and spiritual awareness. After a couple of indie hits, the duo slowly made inroads while opening for rap royalty like De La Soul, Rakim, and Run-D.M.C. Their debut album, Mind Over Matter, was released in May of 2000 and features collaborations with fellow Bay Area rappers Rasco, Planet Asia, and the Grouch. Although Zion I operates out of Berkeley, the group was originally formed in Atlanta, making their music difficult to classify as strictly West Coast hip-hop. Their musical style makes them even harder to define. With a style that borrows from hip-hop, trance, drum’n’bass, and reggae, Zion I’s style is equally mystical and mystifying.
