Cottonwood Participating in World Laughter Experiment

3/17/15, Cottonwood, AZ

According to the World Health Organization, stress is the number one health threat in the United States. Local ‘glad scientist’, Dr. Smokey Rain, is responding by formally kicking-off the world’s largest laughter experiment dubbed The Laffathon. To celebrate the kickoff, a Laughter Demonstration is being held at the Cottonwood Chamber of Commerce (1010 S. Main St., Cottonwood) on April Fool’s Day from 4-6pm. There is a simultaneous Laughter Demonstrations in Detroit, MI and Tel Aviv, Israel has already demonstrated support.

“Laughter and a humorous perspective can make us healthier, smarter and happier,” Dr. Rain observes. “The Laffathon experiment is simply challenging yourself daily to laugh and smile more, especially when you don’t feel like it, because that’s when you need it most.” Dr. Rain adds, “Like a giant sponge, you can squeeze out the stress and absorb the humor till it overflows and you laugh. It may seem a bit silly, but it sure beats checking into the hospital. Nurse your humor and your humor will nurse you.” Dr. Rain is a field gelotologist and has been involved in over 20 years of laughter and humor application and research and is the founder of the Freedom to Laugh Coalition, a free club to liberate laughter.

“Stress can be a killer. Managing stress is essential to good health. Heart disease, hypertension, stroke, diabetes, Alzheimer’s disease, depression and panic disorder are just part of a growing list of health issues that laughter and humor development can prevent or treat,” Dr. Rain emphasizes. It is estimated that over 90% of patients walk through their doctor’s doors because of stress and stress related illnesses. Dr. Rain acknowledges, “When you smile and laugh more the only thing you stand to lose is stress, a bad attitude, a bit of weight and your frown.” The purpose is to improve individual and community health, invite collaboration and generate joy to enliven the community.

Dr. Rain commends the City of Cottonwood, “Cottonwood has been very supportive and cooperative, it’s been a pleasure to work with Mayor Diane Joens, the Chamber of Commerce, other city officials and citizens”. Everyone is welcome to come join in the fun, bring your family and friends and shake off stress with rejuvenating laughter. “You can bring a sign or just your smile,” Dr. Rain suggests. For more information please contact Dr. Smokey Rain at (928) 274-5347, http://www.laffathon.com or at laffathon@gmail.com.

The Sedona International Film Festival is proud to present the Northern Arizona premiere of the critic and audience sensation “Cake” starring Golden Globe winner and nominee Jennifer Aniston.

The film will show April 2-8 at the Mary D. Fisher Theatre.

“Cake” also features an award-winning, stellar ensemble cast including Felicity Huffman, William H. Macy, Adriana Barraza, Sam Worthington and Anna Kendrick.

“Cake” takes us on an inspiring and emotional journey with a woman trying to navigate her way through personal redemption.

Claire Simmons (Jennifer Aniston) is in pain. Her physical pain is evident in the scars that line her body and the way she carries herself, wincing with each tentative step. She’s no good at hiding her emotional pain either. She has driven away her husband, her friends – even her chronic pain support group has kicked her out.

The only one left in Claire’s otherwise solitary existence is her housekeeper-turned-caretaker, Silvana (Academy Award-nominee Adriana Barraza). But the suicide of Nina – one of Claire’s fellow chronic-pain group members (Academy Award-nominee Anna Kendrick) – prompts another fixation. In pursuing questions about the death of a woman she barely knew, Claire explores the boundaries between life and death, abandonment and heartbreak, danger and salvation. As she inserts herself into the lives of Nina’s husband (Sam Worthington) and the son Nina left behind, Claire just might find salvation.

“An Oscar-worthy performance for Jennifer Aniston in an inspiring film about rediscovering your life,” raves renowned critic Pete Hammond.

“Cake” will be shown at the Mary D. Fisher Theatre April 2-8. Showtimes will be 7 p.m. on Thursday, April 2; 4 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, April 3-4; 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. on Tuesday, April 7; and 7 p.m. on Wednesday, April 8.

Tickets are $12, or $9 for Film Festival members. For tickets and more information, please call 928-282-1177. Both the theatre and film festival office are located at 2030 W. Hwy. 89A, in West Sedona.

Apr 2 @ 7:30 pm – 10:00 pm

Thursday, April 2 | 7:30 p.m.
Tickets: $67.50-$87.50

Five-time GRAMMY Award-winning singer-songwriter and 2012 Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame inductee Mary Chapin Carpenter will embark on a unique series of intimate, acoustic performances this spring. The tour marks Carpenter’s return to singing both timeless hits and deep cuts from her expansive and beloved thirteen-album catalog after performing with orchestras in early 2014. Carpenter will be joined on stage by longtime friends Jon Carroll (piano) and John Doyle (guitars, bouzouki).

Carpenter has spent the past year performing alongside world-renowned orchestras since the release of her debut orchestral album, Songs From The Movie, which was conducted and arranged by six-time GRAMMY Award winner Vince Mendoza. Carpenter’s world debut orchestral concert took place on January 24 at Glasgow Royal Concert Hall alongside the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra. In March, she performed two milestone concerts at New York’s Lincoln Center with the New York Philharmonic, conducted by Mr. Mendoza, and was joined by special guests Joan Baez, Shawn Colvin, Jerry Douglas, Tift Merritt, and Aoife O’Donovan.

Over the course of her career, Carpenter has sold over 13 million records. With hits like “Passionate Kisses” and “He Thinks He’ll Keep Her,” she has won five GRAMMY Awards (with fifteen nominations), two CMA Awards, and two Academy of Country Music awards for her vocals. Her songs speak to the most personal of life’s details and the most universal.

Aoife O’Donovan
Aiofe O’Donovan is an American singer and songwriter based in Brooklyn. While she is best known as the founder and frontwoman of the string band Crooked Still, she is also one-third of the female trio Sometymes Why, and has appeared on the “Prairie Home Companion” radio program. She has collaborated with artists as varied as jazz trumpeter Dave Douglas, Yo-Yo Ma’s Edgar Meyer, Chris Thile’s Goat Rodeo Sessions band, the Boston Pops Orchestra, and Olabelle, to name just a few.
